What do I need to take into account when downloading the latest firmware?
Follow these tips/pointers when downloading new firmware:
- Check the version number
- Connect the computer using a wired connection
- Do not use the router for the time being
- Make a back-up of the router settings
- Never switch the router off while installing firmware
Check the version number
Make sure that you always download the correct firmware file from the Sitecom website. Some products have different version numbers. An example of a version number is: v1 001 or v1 002.
Firmware for the WLR-4000 (product code) v1 001 (version number) will not work for a WLR-4000 (product code) v1 002 (version number). The version number can be found on the bottom of the router.
Connect the computer using a wired connection
It is advisable to temporarily connect your desktop PC or notebook to the router via a network (UTP) cable. This prevents any interference in the wireless signal while downloading the firmware. Do not forget to temporarily switch off the wireless receiver on your desktop PC or notebook when you connect the computer using a wired connection.

Do not use the router for the time being
Make sure that the router is not being used at the time of the firmware update. The Internet connection (the cable that is connected to your modem via the blue WAN port) may remain in place, but disconnect as many devices as possible or temporarily disable the wireless connection. The router must remain on at all times.
It is, of course, important that the computer that is being used to download and install the firmware must remain connected to the router.
Make a back-up of the router settings
Although the router settings should be retained after a firmware update, it may sometimes be the case that a number of settings will be lost. It is therefore advisable to make a back-up of the router settings. To do this, follow the steps below:
1. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Safari.
2. Type the following address in the address bar http://sitecom.router (or http://192.168.0.1) and press Enter.
3. Log in with your username and password. For the user name, enter “admin” (lowercase). The password (WPA2 code) can be found in the Network Login Details flyer that may have been supplied or on the bottom of the router.
Make a back-up of the router settings
4. Click on Toolbox.
5. Click on Back-up.
6. Click on the Save button next to Backup Settings to save the settings to a file on your computer.
After the firmware update, you can use the Restore Settings button to upload the settings file, and all the settings will be restored.
Never switch the router off while installing firmware
Important! A firmware update must be installed correctly in its entirety! Do not switch your router off and on while installing firmware! This may cause the installation to be aborted, as a result of which your router will no longer work.
Do not disconnect your AC adapter (power adapter) from your router during the installation process. This may cause the installation to be aborted, as a result of which your router will no longer work.
During the installation process the router will reboot, causing you to briefly lose the connection with your network (and thus the Internet). This is part of the procedure, and is quite normal. Do not worry about this or start switching the router on and off yourself because of this loss of connection. Do you still have no connection approximately 30 minutes after completing the installation? Wait until that point to switch the router off and back on.
After correctly completing the installation, wait for approximately 10 minutes before using your network again. The router itself will eventually re-establish a network connection after a correct installation. This may take approximately 10 minutes.
